Handbags Kenya FAQ: Every Question Answered Before You Buy

handbags Kenya FAQ Every Question Answered | Mel's Fashion

We hear a lot of questions at Mel's Fashion — on WhatsApp, in our DMs, and face to face at pop-up events across Nairobi. Some questions come up so often that we decided to answer them all in one place. This is the most honest, complete guide to buying handmade handbags in Kenya. Whether you are a first-time buyer or a loyal customer with questions, this one is for you.

Pricing & Value Questions

How much does a quality handmade leather handbag cost in Kenya?

At Mel's Fashion, our bags range from KES 2,800 for a small crossbody to KES 7,500 for a full-size structured tote. The price reflects genuine leather materials, hand stitching, brass hardware, and fabric lining — not the fast-fashion formula of buying cheap and marking up. If you find a 'genuine leather' bag in Kenya for under KES 1,500, it is almost certainly PU leather. Real leather has material costs that make very low prices impossible.

Why are handcrafted bags more expensive than the ones on Jumia Kenya?

Jumia bags are mostly mass-produced overseas from PU leather or low-grade bonded leather. They are manufactured at high volume to hit low price points. Handcrafted bags like ours are made one at a time, by hand, using premium genuine leather sourced for quality. The price difference is the difference between a bag that lasts 12 months and one that lasts 10 years. Over time, the handcrafted bag is actually cheaper.

Do you offer payment plans or pay-on-delivery?

Yes — we accept M-Pesa Lipa Na M-Pesa, card, and cash on delivery within Nairobi. For orders above KES 5,000, we also offer a simple two-payment arrangement: 50% to confirm the order, 50% on delivery. WhatsApp us to arrange this: the number is on our website at mellsfashion.co.ke.

Is it worth spending more on a Kenyan-made bag versus an imported one?

Absolutely. When you buy from Mel's Fashion, you are buying a bag made in Nairobi by a Nairobi artisan. You are supporting local craft, local employment, and a business that understands exactly what Kenyan women need from a bag. The quality is comparable to international mid-range brands — at a significantly lower price. And if anything goes wrong, you can reach us directly on WhatsApp the same day.

Material & Quality Questions

What is the difference between genuine leather and PU leather?

Genuine leather is made from real animal hide — it is durable, develops character over time, and lasts years with basic care. PU leather (polyurethane) is a synthetic plastic-coated fabric that looks like leather but peels, cracks, and breaks down within 12–18 months of daily use. All Mel's Fashion bags are made from genuine leather. We never use PU. If you are ever unsure what material a bag is made from when shopping anywhere in Kenya, smell it — real leather has an earthy organic smell, PU smells like plastic.

Will a leather bag handle Nairobi's rain?

Yes — with a little care. Genuine leather naturally resists light rain. If your bag gets caught in a Nairobi afternoon shower, wipe it dry with a soft cloth and let it air dry at room temperature. Do not place it near direct heat or in the sun to dry. Once dry, apply a small amount of leather conditioner to restore moisture to the leather. We recommend conditioning your bag once every 3 months for best results.

How long will a Mel's Fashion bag last?

With regular use and basic care, our bags last between 5 and 15 years. We have customers who bought their first Mel's bag four years ago and it still looks excellent with a natural patina. The key is: avoid soaking the leather, condition it regularly, store it in a dust bag when not in use, and avoid overloading it beyond its natural capacity. We design our bags to last a lifetime — not a season.
